3 Common Traumatic Brain Injuries

3 Common Traumatic Brain Injuries

Brain Injury Lawyer

A TBI or traumatic brain injury is one of the most serious injuries you can sustain in a motor vehicle accident. As a brain injury lawyer from a firm like John K. Zaid & Associates can explain, TBIs can change the course of your life, impact your working situation and affect your cognitive abilities.

Crash-related brain injuries often occur because of the jerking motion of the head, violent shaking or blunt trauma. Here are five of the most common TBIs.

Hematomas

A hematoma is a blood clot that occurs outside the brain or between the brain and the dura. Blood clots that occur outside of the brain and dura are known as epidural hematomas, whereas clots between the brain and dura are subdural hematomas.

If you have an epidural hematoma, you may experience, headaches, confusion, seizures and other neurological problems.

If you have a subdural hematoma, on the other hand, you may have, loss of muscle control, back pain, and loss of bowel and bladder control

A doctor will generally use an imaging study to diagnose a hematoma.

Concussions

While concussions are one of the most common, they also tend to have the most delayed symptoms. When you suffer from a concussion, you may have symptoms that include, headaches, dizziness, vertigo, poor concentration, nausea, confusion, and sleep disturbances.

When a blow to the head causes a person’s head to move back and forth with force, it can easily cause a concussion. If you have a concussion, the physician may test your physical strength, coordination and reflexes. In some cases, the doctor may order an MRI or a CT scan. If there is no evidence on imaging scans, a doctor may test your attention span and memory.

Skull Fractures

There are multiple types of skull fractures. You could suffer from the following fractures such as, a depressed skull fracture, linear skull fracture, or a basilar skull fracture.

In a depressed skull fracture, part of the skull is caved in or crushed, whereas with a linear skull fracture, there is a thin line or crack. With a basilar skull fracture, a crack at the base of the brain causes cerebral spinal fluid to leak.

If you suffered a TBI in a motor vehicle accident or because of someone else’s negligence, then you may be entitled to compensation. TBIs can take months and sometimes years to recover from fully. In fact, some people may not recover fully from their TBI. To find out how much your case is worth, consult with a brain injury lawyer as soon as possible.
